Due to the weakening of state borders within the European Union and the favorable economic situation of Luxembourg, there has been a steep rise in migration across Luxembourg's borders. Of special prominence are cross-border workers, who live in the surrounding border regions of France, Belgium and Germany and now make up 44 percent of the workforce. This increasing presence of 'foreigners' is prompting substantial change to Luxembourg's traditionally triglossic language situation, where Luxembourgish, French and German have coexisted in public use. In this situation, competing language ideologies are likely to emerge, reflecting the interests of different groups. Horner and Weber (2008) discuss the presence of two opposing language ideologies among the autochthonous population: the trilingual language ideology (trilingualism as the 'language' of Luxembourg); and the nationalist language ideology (Luxembourgish as the only true language of Luxembourg), which latter they claim has increased in reaction to the rise in cross-border workers. Little research has been done on the language ideologies of cross-border workers themselves, however. Encountering Luxembourg's multilingualism, cross-border workers may adopt one of the ideologies above, or one of two further competing ideologies: that of societal multilingualism as a problem or as an opportunity. Through analysis of metalinguistic discourse in interviews with thirty cross-border workers in Luxembourg, this article examines how participants approach societal multilingualism in Luxembourg and how cross-border workers might contribute to competing perspectives on the place of languages in Luxembourg.

2010 marked ten years of the New Zealand government monitoring the attitudes of New Zealanders, both Māori and non-Māori, towards the Māori language. Academic researchers have been undertaking similar research for a much longer period. This article reviews the main findings of research on attitudes towards the Māori language among non-Māori in particular since the 1980s, and considers to what extent recent government surveys show evidence of change in the attitudes of New Zealand's non-indigenous population towards the country's indigenous language. The article concludes that work undertaken to date provides us with many insights into attitudes towards the Māori language, but further research is required to determine whether and how such attitudes are changing.

New Zealand's main government Māori language planning agencies, the Māori Language Commission and the Ministry of Māori Development, have engaged for some time in language planning targeting the attitudes and behaviours of non-Māori New Zealanders. This activity is based on the belief that the attitudes and behaviours of majority language speakers exert an important influence on the health of minority languages. To date, there has been little evaluation of the effectiveness of this approach. This article examines the official policy and practice of the two agencies in this regard and evaluates their effectiveness, in terms of both internal factors and external responses. Based on this analysis, points for improvement and potentially effective future directions are discussed.

When majority language speakers are referred to in minority language planning, it is generally in relation to their 'attitudes'. It is not just the attitudes of majority language speakers that impact on minority languages, however, but also their behaviours. Accordingly, 'planning for tolerability' ([author's name] 2008a) targets both the attitudes and behaviours of majority language speakers towards minority languages. This article addresses the little-considered question of what behaviours non-Māori New Zealanders might adopt to support Māori language regeneration. An analysis of New Zealand government Māori language policy and the questionnaire and interview responses of eighty non-Māori New Zealanders reveals that, while the government's position on 'desired behaviours' for non-Māori is unclear at best, non-Māori New Zealanders have a wide range of such behaviours in mind. The extent to which these non-Māori are willing to engage in these behaviours is a complex matter, influenced both by their own attitudes towards the Māori language and by other factors. These results have suggestive implications for the future development of Māori language planning targeting non-Māori, but leave open a further question: whether the behaviours identified are those that Māori New Zealanders might themselves desire from non-Māori.

During Covid-19 lockdown in New Zealand from March to June 2020, gendered discourses appeared in artistic and commercial products featuring Ashley Bloomfield, New Zealand's Director General of Health and 'hero of quarantine'. Using an analytical framework combining Foucauldian discourse analysis with critical multimodality, we explore how Ashley is shaped into existence through discourses portraying him as a superhero, love interest/sex symbol, national treasure, saviour, saint and authority figure. These emergent discourses ride on the wave of longstanding dominant discourses relating to gender and sexuality, alongside nation, class and ethnicity. While dominant discourses may provide reassurance when established realities are under threat, they simultaneously cause harm by reproducing unequal power relations between social groups. We contend that, even in periods of crisis, we should consider what broader messages we are sending when we latch onto the latest discursive trend.

Critical sociolinguistics has demonstrated that the social construct of the "native speaker" has a strong impact on people's lives, but research on "native speaker effects" in the workplace remains rare. This article examines such effects from the perspective of four "native English speaker" trainees on temporary contracts in a multilingual European Union institution in Luxembourg. Applying the framework of sociolinguistic stance to interview data and drawings, we examine how the participants position themselves towards the "native English speaker" construct at work, and how they think others position them. According to our participants, "native English speaker" positioning confers privilege but restricts opportunities, demonstrating that the interest of a multilingual organisation in using the "native English speaker" as a resource does not automatically provide a powerful position to "native English speaking" workers. Our results featuring trainees in precarious labour conditions raise broader issues regarding the precaritisation of language work in the EU.
